Before it became the hotel-spa it is today, the Château de Wallerand has been through the ages. On this land, the Gallo-Romans smelted iron.

The Seigniory of Vireux-Wallerand became part of the House of Burgundy, then of Spain in 1555, and was annexed to France in 1680. A few years later, Louis XIV decided to sell it to Lord Gillot. Commissioner of Wars in Givet, he built a castle there, his future home, in 1714.

Construction of the castle

A building in the classical Mosan style located in the north of the Champagne-Ardenne region and whose construction dates back to the 18th century, the Château de Wallerand was initially the residence of Lord Etienne Gillot d'Hon.

A new decoration

In the middle of the 19th century, the castle was bought by Baron Sibuet. Prosper Joseph Sibuet was a State Councillor and Deputy of the Ardennes from 1863 to 1870 and General Councillor of the Givet canton under Napoleon III.

Return to the forges

With the approach of the Great War, Baron Sibuet's daughter, Countess de Villermont, decided to sell the castle to the Société des Forges de Vireux-Molhain. The Director of the time was given luxurious accommodation.

1975

A period of transition

Until 2013, the castle was owned by the Syndicat Intercommunal des Deux Vireux. The purpose of this syndicate is the socio-cultural and sporting development of Vireux-Molhain and Vireux-Wallerand.

2015

Purchase of the castle

For its three hundredth anniversary, the Château de Wallerand has a new owner. It was immediately clear that the building needed major renovation. A major period of work begins.

2020

Opening of the hotel-restaurant

After five long years of work, the work is nearing completion. This event is marked by the official opening of the Château de Wallerand hotel-restaurant in its current form.

Opening of the spa and orangery

The château's team, wishing to diversify its offer, quickly focuses on a wellness area as well as a place specifically designed to host various private and professional events.

The terrace of the castle opens its doors as soon as the weather is fine. Located at the back of the estate, facing the Meuse, it is composed of several tables and cosy areas. Perfect for a quiet drink.

The gardens are the ideal place for a gentle awakening. Take advantage of a well-landscaped green space to do a little yoga, for example! Just a few steps from the castle gates, you can also sit down and watch the river Meuse flow by.

The Château de Wallerand is located a few metres from a cycle path on the banks of the Meuse. 4 electric bikes are available for hire. Do not hesitate to contact the reception of the castle to reserve them.

An electric boat, moored in front of the castle, is available during the summer months. This is an opportunity to sail quietly on the Meuse and enjoy the Ardennes scenery. Disconnection guaranteed.
